On installing Gaussx 3.8, the error message "Error initializing GAUSS" occurs.

This information applies to Gaussx for Windows, Vsn  3.8.2, running under Gauss 3.5.35

Symptoms

On installing Gaussx, the following message is displayed after setting the Gauss directory:

GaussxID 1.0.0  Error initializing GAUSS. 

As a result, the Gauss version field displays 'GAUSS Light for Windows' and no entry is possible for the Gauss License ID and the Gaussx License ID fields. While installation continues correctly, on launching Gaussx, the Econotron software copyright is displayed, and then freezes.
 

Cause

Internal recognition of the environment is not working.

Resolution

Explicitly set the environment variable GAUSSHOME.  In each case, set the actual directory where Gauss 3.5 exists.

For Windows 9x, edit the autoexec.bat file, and add the line:

set GAUSSHOME= c:\gauss35

and then reboot.

For Windows NT and 2000, select the properties menu of my computer (right click), and set the environment variable GAUSSHOME to the Gauss 3.5 directory.  You do not need to reboot.
